Product details for Synology RackStation RS819 4-bay NAS

If you're searching for a secure and efficient way to store your data, then Synology's RS819 rackmount NAS is the ideal choice. Different from traditional external hard drives, the NAS (network-attached storage) device can be integrated directly into your network. This gives all computers connected to your network access to the device and data. It offers you over enough storage space and requires much less power than regular PCs. The rackmount NAS device and is equipped with a Realtek RTD1296 1.40 GHz processor. Several users can access data at the same time thanks to the 2 GB of RAM. You can incorporate the following data storage arrays in this rackmount NAS system: 0, JBOD, 10, 6, 5 and 1. When using JBOD (or "just a bunch of disks") you can combine several hard drives, regardless of their storage capacity, and retain all of the storage space. This is not the case with RAID levels.

When using RAID 0, hard drives (ideally of equal storage capacities) are interconnected and work in parallel — this means a higher, faster performance as computer tasks are not handled by just one drive. However, there is no fault tolerance because data is not mirrored, which means this RAID level is better suited for high speed storage of large volumes of data. RAID 1 offers you high data security through data mirroring. A replica is created of all your data from one drive to another, meaning if one crashes you will still retain all of your information. This also means that the capacity of all your drives is halved because of duplicated content. For smaller NAS systems RAID 1 is an ideal option. RAID 5 stores your data on multiple drives, which gives you high data security. If a drive begins to fail, the data it holds will be recreated and distributed to the other drives allowing users to continue working uninterrupted. For larger NAS systems with more than three hard drives RAID 5 is the ideal choice to retain optimal data security and total drive storage capacity. When using RAID 6 you get higher data security, even if two hard drives fail, the system will still function.

The 1U 4-bay rackmount NAS is only 304,8 mm (12") deep, and can be deployed in a 2-post or wall-mount rack.

The RS819 delivers sequential data throughput of over 225 MB/s
(read) and 169 MB/s (write)
With outstanding encrypted data transfer rates -224 MB/s read and 152 MB/s write - the RS819 is an efficient shared memory for many users that protects valuable data.

Scalable up to 8 drives with RX418 expansion unit (optional)
