Product details for Synology DiskStation DS620slim 6-bay NAS
Synology's DS620SLIM desktop NAS is a secure, efficient storage solution for your data. Different from traditional external hard drives, the NAS (network-attached storage) device can be directly integrated into your network. This gives all computers connected to your network access to the device and data. It offers you sufficient storage space and needs far less power than regular PCs. It has an Intel Celeron J3355 2.0 GHz processor. It has The 2 GB RAM allows several users to access data at the same time. The following data storage arrays are available for this desktop NAS system: 0, 1, 10, 5, 6 and JBOD. JBOD (or "just a bunch of disks") allows you to connect hard drives of various sizes to create a multi-drive storage system. Unlike RAID levels, you will not lose any storage capacity of the various drives you combine.
RAID 0 stores your data on multiple drives, which increases performance and speed as all work is split among the various drives rather than handled by just one. The drives should ideally have equal storage capacities and a minimum of two drives are required. This RAID level offers no fault tolerance and is therefore best suited for large volumes of high speed storage. RAID 1 offers you high data security through data mirroring. A replica is created of all your data from one drive to another, meaning if one crashes you will still retain all of your information. This also means that the capacity of all your drives is halved because of duplicated content. For smaller NAS systems RAID 1 is an ideal option. RAID 5 stores your data on multiple drives, which gives you high data security. If a drive begins to fail, the data it holds will be recreated and distributed to the other drives allowing users to continue working uninterrupted. For larger NAS systems with more than three hard drives RAID 5 is the ideal choice to retain optimal data security and total drive storage capacity. You get a higher level of data security when implementing RAID 6, even if two hard drives fail, the system will still be operational.
